I Want to Work: Strategies for Developing Work Skills and Increasing Community Integration for Clients who are Blind or Visually Impaired

Transitioning clients to Employment while developing ADL skills increases client motivation, provides immediate skills reinforcement and builds self-confidence. This presentation will review the VRT and Job Readiness skills integration model used for integrating traditional Vision Rehabilitation skills into employment training and vocational rehabilitation, and provide multiple strategies and examples on how to build community partnerships for transitioning clients to work. Case studies will be used to illustrate how to utilize these strategies during the time of remote learning and Covid-19.

Learning objectives:

  1. Participants will review how traditional Vision Rehabilitation skills can be integrated with Job Readiness Outcomes.
  2. Participants will explore how to use a VR team approach to build community connections leading to opportunities for clients to practice their skills in a variety of employment settings.
  3. Participants will explore strategies for applying these methodologies with clients during remote learning.
